Amherst, established in 1821, attempted to rapidly set up itself as a school that opened its ways to every qualified understudy, regardless of their experiences. The College's first African-American understudy graduated in 1826, and the first Japanese understudy to move on from a Western school graduated in 1870. In 1871, an individual from the trustees expressed, "If a lady is completely qualified, [Amherst's] entryways will be interested in her." Unfortunately, it wasn't until 1962 that the school started contracting ladies as residency track educators, and until 1975 to wind up coeducational.
